Celebrating 5 Years of Prison Island Belfast: From 25 Challenge Cells to a Multi-Activity Phenomenon

Time flies when you’re doing time! Prison Island Belfast is officially turning five years old, and what a wild ride it’s been. From humble beginnings to becoming one of Belfast’s Top Attractions- we’ve got plenty of craic to share as we look back at the journey.

The Early Days

Back in 2019, we kicked things off with 25 cells, challenging teams to test their smarts, strength, and teamwork. We quickly became the talk of the town with our unique spin on competitive socialising, But we didn’t stop there!

Expanding the Prison

In true Belfast style, we went hard with the upgrades. First, we introduced the legendary Axe Yard, where throwing an axe became everyone’s new favourite pastime. But like a dodgy bit of Belfast weather, things changed again. We flattened the Axe Yard (RIP) to make room for six brand-new prison cells and added a first floor, expanding the venue and upping the ante for all our visitors. Introducing a brand-new INTERACTIVE AXE THROWING activity that has elevated our experience.

Belfast’s Multi-Activity Hub

Fast forward to today, and Prison Island Belfast isn’t just about cells and axes anymore—it’s a full-on multi-activity experience. With four activities to choose from, there’s something for everyone

• The Cells: 31 prison themed challenges to tackle
• Quiz Boxing: A head-to-head arena for trivia titans.
• THINKBOX:Perfect for those who love escape rooms and puzzles
• Interactive Axe Throwing: REAL axes with 15 games to choose from

Celebrity Visits: Who’s Done Time at Prison Island?

Prison Island Belfast has seen its fair share of legends over the years:
•         Neil Patrick Harris: Yes, NPH himself! First, he tackled the cells, then returned to master our boxes. Absolute legend.
•         Dame Kelly Holmes: The double Olympic gold medallist enjoyed a few trips to the venue and showed us how a real champion takes on the challenges.
•         William Thompson vs. Ciarán Bartlett: Belfast’s comedy giants went head-to-head for the ultimate prize—  ‘BOOST’ DRINK CHALLENGE GLORY
•         That Prize Guy: Challenged a team to beat them in the cells. The results? THE LADS TOOK THE WIN.

• Carolyn Stewart: Rebranded her famous patties for us toPrison Patties and got them stocked in the venue – a huge hit.
• Holly the Destroyer: Took to the Quiz Showdown Ring, daring anyone to beat her in the ultimate trivia battle.

.          Carl Frampton: Took all the family out for a memorial prison stint – and has returned to beat his score

• Tommy McCarthy and the Lads: Called out their online supporters for a game in the ring. Of course the lads dominated.

Milestones That Made Us Buzz

It’s been more than just good craic and competitions. Prison Island Belfast has achieved some cracking milestones:

• Raisedthousands of pounds for Action for Children and Pure Mental 
• Showcased at theFestival of Business.
• Hit11,000 followers on Instagram—cheers for the likes, Belfast!
• Scored a4.9-star rating on Google and bagged the TripAdvisor 2022,2023 & 2024 award
•   Picked up the TOP GUARD AWARD at the Prison Island 2024 Conference in Paris

We’ve also partnered with local legends like Bperfect appearing on ‘Made up in Belfast’ and hosted numerous team events.

Not to mention celebrating alongside our World Cup finalists who smashed it in Brussels ‘23 and Sweden ‘24.
